Epistrophe nitidicollis

Epistrophe nitidicollis

Epistrophe:  Black-and-yellow banded overfills with mainly yellow faces that fly in the Spring and early Summer. Apart fro E. elegans, which is quite distinctively marked they are tricky to separate from other yellow-banded genera such as Syrphus.

Epistrophe nitidicollis: This is the commonest of the banded Epistrphe with orange antenna, and can be separated from others in this group by its black scuttled hairs. Care is needed with this character as there are several other species; in particular, it might be confused with Parasyrphus nigritarsis, except that this species has tarsi that are black; yellow in E nitidicollis.

A woodland species that visits a wide range of plants along rides, although it seems to favour Garlic Mustard. Most records are in May and June and anything later should be treated with caution and checked for other species.
