Ringlet

Aphantopus hyperantus

Ringlet

The soft and velvety wings of the Ringlet are bordered with the characteristic fine white fringe that shines as it catches the sun. The undersides are adorned with distictive and gleaming eye spots. It is these that gave this butterfly its name two centuries ago, when ‘ringlet’ was in common usage to describe any small circle, such as the fairy wings caused by fungus on a leaf.
